Kick Tolerance

Company minimum not set
Formula: KTF = (MAMW - MW) * shoeTVD / TVD
Source: N. Lapeyrouse, Formulas and Calculations for Drilling, Production and Workover, 2nd ed. (as summarized at drillingformulas.com), kick tolerance factor
Formula: MASICP = (MAMW - MW) * 0.052 * shoeTVD; Hmax = (MASICP - KI * 0.052 * TVD) / (MW * 0.052 - Gi); Vbottom = Hmax * annCapBHA; take the smaller of Vbottom and the shoe volume converted to bottom conditions by Boyle's law
Source: SLP Alaska Well Control Manual (Brian Walden), SLP Alaska Well Control Total.pptx, slide 936 (definition); N. Lapeyrouse, Formulas and Calculations for Drilling, Production and Workover, 2nd ed. (as summarized at drillingformulas.com); IADC WellSharp Drilling Formula Sheet, Field Units, Revision 4 (26 March 2025) #12 and #32 (height of fluid; Boyle's law)
This screen shows the volume at bottom. The shoe-volume limit by Boyle's law in the formula is not yet calculated here; check it on the rig kick sheet.

Cheat sheet

  • Single-bubble model: influx assumed at the bottom, then circulated to the shoe. Ignores gas expansion and temperature; use the rig's approved kick tolerance for limits.
  • A lower result means less room for an influx. Raise the alarm and follow the well program if tolerance is below the stated minimum.
  • MAASP changes whenever mud weight changes. Recalculate and post it.
  • Company minimum kick tolerance is set by an admin under Admin, Safety Limits. There is no default; until it is set this screen says Company minimum not set.
